The Code of Ethics of the American Counseling Association states that counselors who conduct research must obtain "informed consent" from participants (G.2). Additionally, research which will be used for publication or academic purposes must usually also be approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or human subjects committee.

When survey respondents first arrive at CounselingSurveys.org, the first screen they see is what appears below. This helps explain to them the informed consent process. All surveys made using this site must have an informed consent document.

Welcome! (Step 1 of 4)

Welcome to the survey! To begin, click the button below that reads, "Show me the informed consent document (Step 2)."

The informed consent document will describe who has created this survey and why, and explains the survey topic. It also names the person who you should contact if you have any questions.

After you have read and agreed to the informed consent document, you will afterwards be presented the survey.
